  2. History • Blockbuster is the world’s largest video rental chain. • Its first store was opened in Dallas, Texas on October 19, 1985 by its founder David P. Cook. • In 1996, the Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation was renamed Blockbuster, Inc. and the retail stores were named Blockbuster. Jeffrey Arnett Section 23

Statistics • Blockbuster has over 9,000 stores in 25 countries. • In the last few years they have lost $1.6 billion in 2002, almost $1.0 billion in 2003, and $1.2 billion in 2004. • At the end of 2004, Blockbuster had 5,803 stores in the U.S. and 3,291 international stores. • Blockbuster shut down or sold all outlets in Hong Kong, Brazil, and Spain due to movie piracy.
