Overview • The information provided here describes the process involved in installing cPanel DNSOnly on a server. It needs to be specified here that cPanel DNSOnly is not supported by the version 98 of cPanel & WHM for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. This version is an experimental software. Hence, it isn’t recommended for use in production environments. • The cPanel DNSOnly software enables a user to run a dedicated physical nameserver. This can be used along with other servers for the creation of a DNS cluster. cPanel DNSOnly is cPanel & WHM’s simplest version. It merely replicates DNS zones to a user’s other servers. You need to follow the required instructions in order to install cPanel DNSOnly.
cPanel • cPanel refers to an online Linux-based control panel for simplifying website and server management. It enables any user to manage domains, publish websites, create email accounts, organize web files, etc. cPanel has two interfaces. The user interface is known as cPanel and the server management interface is known as WHM (Web Host Manager). • Most of the web hosting companies provide cPanel in their hosting plans. Web hosting is the service that renders websites accessible over the Internet. It is provided by web hosting companies. The “Best Website Hosting”, the “Best Windows Hosting”, the “Best Cloud Hosting” are some of the terms that are used frequently to refer to the most popular hosting services.
Configuration Requirements Your system needs to be equipped with the below-mentioned requirements in order to successfully install and use cPanel DNSOnly. • Your server has to meet the system requirements for its specific OS (Operating System). • There should not be any previous content on your server. • Traffic on ports 53, 953, and 2087 needs to be allowed by your server. • Traffic must be allowed on port 25 if you want email notifications to be sent by the server. • Your DNS cluster configuration, needs to meet the requirements for DNS clusters. • If your DNS cluster is meant to include those domains that use DNSSEC, then all the servers of the cluster have to run PowerDNS.
Install cPanel DNSOnly You need to carry out the following steps in order to install cPanel DNSOnly: • Navigate to the /home directory on your server. • Run the below-mentioned command for fetching the latest installation files from cPanel’s servers. curl -o latest-dnsonly -L https://securedownloads.cpanel.net/latest-dnsonly • Run the following command for opening and executing the installation files: • sh latest-dnsonly

Access cPanel DNSOnly You have to carry out the below-mentioned steps in order to access the cPanel DNSOnly interface. • Navigate to https://IP:2087 in the browser of your preference. In it, “IP” represents the IP address of your server. If you have a domain name which resolves to the server, then you can use it rather than the IP address. • Enter root in the text box, Username. • Enter your password in the text box, Password. • Click Log in
Remove the Trial License Banner • Here it needs to be mentioned that you must have a cPanel DNSOnly license. This is obtained automatically by the server during installation. If that isn’t the case, then you should contact cPanel Customer Service. • You will get a Trial License banner in your WHM Home interface, if a trial license is being used by your server. If you want to remove this banner then you need to remove the trial license from the server.
Trial License’s Removal from the Server • In order to remove the trial license from the server, you need to carry out the following steps: • Contact cPanel Customer Service. • Request them to deactivate your trial license. • Create a directory for containing the cPanel license files. • Move the following two files to the directory that you have created: • cpanel.lisc file • /root/.cpanel/datastore/_usr_local_cpanel_cpanel_-F file • For this purpose, you need to run the following commands: • mv /usr/local/cpanel/cpanel.lisc /root/trashfiles/ • mv /root/.cpanel/datastore/_usr_local_cpanel_cpanel_-F /root/trashfiles/ • The term “trashfiles” in the above-mentioned commands represents that particular directory which contains the license files. • Restart cPanel DNSOnly. You need to run the following command for this purpose: • /usr/local/cpanel/scripts/restartsrv_cpsrvd
cPanel DNSOnly and DNSSEC • DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions) in DNS clusters are supported by cPanel & WHM. A DNS resolver compares the DNSSEC record of the DNS server with the registrar’s DS record. If these match, then the record is considered valid. • The DNSSEC keys of a domain can be created, deleted, or managed in the Zone Editor interface in cPanel. cPanel >> Home >> Domains >> Zone Editor • The following script is used by the system for synchronizing and revoking those DNSSEC keys in a DNS cluster that are currently active: /usr/local/cpanel/scripts/dnssec-cluster-keys • For performing this step manually, you need to run that script as the root user.
