Mitosis Cell reproduction or division
InterphaseThe phase in which the cell spends the majority of its life • G1 phase- • Cell grows in size • Protein synthesis to make needed things • S phase- • DNA copies itself (Replicates) • G2 phase- • Protein synthesis to prepare for division
Prophase • DNA coils up to form chromosomes • Nuclear envelope and nucleolus disappear • Centrioles move towards the poles and lay down spindle fibers
Metaphase • Centrioles at the poles • Chromosomes attach to spindle fibers at the centromere • Chromosomes lined up on the equator
Anaphase • Chromosomes pulled apart • Sister chromatids pulled towards opposite poles
Telophase • Chromosomes uncoil back to chromatin • Nuclear envelope and nucleolus reappear • Cytokinesis • Cell membrane pinches in • Cytoplasm distributes equally between the two cells
Daughter Cells • Two identical cells with the same number of chromosomes as the original cell
