SIGCSE 2008:My Report Susan Haynes
What I attended • Thursday: • Keynote: stand-in for Randy Pausch • www.cmu.edu/randyslecture • Panel: CS1 for Scientists • Sedgewicks: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/introcs/home/ • Special Session: Nifty Assignments • nifty.stanford.edu • Special Session: NSF Funding Opportunities • OMG! Seems like a lot is available -- especially for outreach and for improving UG education. REUs still seem very strong.
What I attended • Friday: • SIGCSE Keynote Address: Marissa Mayer, Google • NSF Showcase • Papers: Security • Open source computer algebra systems • MAXIMA, AXIOM • Special Session: CS4HS • http://www.cs.cmu.edu/cs4hs/ • Workshop: Ruby on Rails (pathetic) • It’s a possibility for senior-level web class. Definitely not for database
What I attended • Saturday: • ABET PEV retraining :-( • SIGCSE Banquet: Ed Lazowska • ABET PEV retraining • Workshop: Effective NSF grants (about 30 minutes).
Outside of SIGCSE • Thursday lunch at <I forget where> with colleagues from ASU, other. • Thursday dinner at McCormick & Schmick (Gus, Mike, Matt, Li, Bill) • Friday lunch at the food court watched the hokey pokey and chicken dance on the ice rink (Li) • Saturday dinner at Jake’s Crawfish Grill (Matt) • Serious chocolate purchases (> $150) near ABET training: Leonidas, Treuchet, a Portland product • Went to Powell’s Bookstore
Possible initiatives I am fired up for • Outreach to middle school students - summer camp • Outreach to HS teachers • Computational science curriculum
