  1. What surrounds Earth? Earth’s Atmosphere: Atmo- means gas. -sphere means area. The Atmosphere

  2. Earth’s Atmosphere: • Is a layer of gases that surrounds the planet. • Is over 600km thick. • Makes conditions on Earth suitable for LivingThings. 600km

  3. Each layer ranges in thickness depending on time of year. In the winter the atmosphere layers are not as thick. The atmosphere is divided into 5distinct layers

  4. Main atmospheric gases: • The gases that make up most of the atmosphere are ______ & ______. • Ozone is a form of oxygen. • Water Vapor is important for weather conditions.

  5. Exosphere (outer) • Blends into outerspace. Outer space contains no air molecules. Satellites and space shuttle orbit the Earth here.

Thermosphere (Heat) • Even though the air is thin (not dense) it is very Hot. • hottest layer (2000 degrees C) • thickest layer (about 400Km thick) • sometimes called the ionosphere • Even though it has the highest temperatures it would still feel cold because the air molecules are to far apart.

  7. Mesosphere (Middle) • Coldest layer. • Most meteors burn up here to create shooting stars. • Meteors burn up because of friction. (Because they collide with gas particles)

  10. Troposphere (Change) • It’s where all weather occurs. • Has the greatest air pressure. • As altitude increases temperature decreases.
