In Pre-Christian times • Ukrainians worshipped the: • Sun god (Dazhboh)- • Dazhboh loved birds!
Humanscould not catch the birds, but they did manage to obtain the bird eggs
the eggs were magical • a source of life
Superstitions • Pysanky held powerful magic associated with it • Protect families from evil spirits • Protect home from catastrophe • Cure diseases
the decorated pysanka: • played an important role in Ukrainian rituals of the new religion.
Year 988 • With the acceptance of Christianity in Ukrainian
Traditions • Eggs are made during the last week of Lent, Holy Week in the Orthodox and Greek (Uniate) Catholic calendars. (Both faiths are represented in Ukraine)

Wax-resist • Pasanky are made using a • wax resist (batik) method
Beeswax • Beeswax was heated in a small bowl on the stove and then scooped into the stylus as needed.
What’s beeswax? • it all begins on a flower in a field. • Bees collect nectar from flowers and bring it to the hive where it becomes either beeswax or honey.
WAX • molten wax is applied to the white egg with a writing motion
any bit of shell covered with wax would be sealed, and remain white
Stylus-pen • Used to paint design onto egg piece of thin brass was wrapped around a needle, forming a hollow cone. attached to a small stick (willow was preferred)

Colors • and • dyes
dyes were prepared from dried plants, roots, bark, berries and insects (cochineal)
Yellowwas obtained from the flowers of the woadwaxen • gold from onion skins
Dye colors • Greenfrom the husks of sunflower seeds • Violetberries and bark of the elderberry bush • Black dye was made from walnut husks
yellow, and more wax applied, and then orange, red, purple, black.
Geometric Design • pysanka designs are geometric figures • The egg itself is most often divided by straight lines into squares, triangles and other shape • These shapes are then filled with other forms and design
Sculpture • Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials
Sculpture • Materials may be worked by removal such as carving; or they may be assembled

Steps for your projects • 1. wedge clay • 2. shape clay into an egg shape • 3. Recycle excess clay from area that you dug out to make –panoramic view
panoramic viewing • leather hard stage (not hard/soft) carve or cut away the window to your egg- • To create a panoramic viewing
You must include on your egg: • Coils • Slab • Pinched • Bas-relief
WAX-Resist • using wax resist • Paint on the design (anywhere where you want the color of the clay body to show) • Do NOT get wax resist on your clothing it doesn’t come out!
Geometric shapes • Using under glaze paint in the psysanka style
