The Origin of Galaxies • Lessons from the Distant Universe An ESF-FWF Research Conference in Partnership with LFUI
Second in a series 12-17 December 2009 24-29 March 2007
3x Obergurgl ... • A winterschool as part of the SISCO network (spectroscopic and imaging surveys for cosmology).
This meeting Two years ago, the first meeting in this series of two was held to prepare observing with three major new facilities: Herschel, SCUBA-2, and ALMA, focusing on the science topic of the origin of galaxies, which benefits especially from data taken using these new telescopes. Late 2009 the first data should have been taken, so December 2009 is the right time to provide a platform to present the first science results. We aim to have a sizable fraction of the participants coming from outside of Europe in order to compare results and discuss the consequences for galaxy formation models in the light of all data obtained, including the wealth of multi-wavelength data that is being gathered using a wide range of instruments.
The other meeting ... • Herschel Science Demonstration Phase Initial Results Presentations • Madrid, 17-18 December 2009 • From their website: • Data embargo rulesno results should be communicated before the SDP Initial Results presentations to be held in ESAC, Madrid on 17-18 December 2009. This event should provide the very first Herschel 'initial science presentations'.
The programme • session 1: theoretical context • session 2: galaxies from z=0 to z=5 • session 3: the ultra high-z universe • session 4: AGN & feedback • session 5: long wavelengths • session 6: line emission (sub-mm) astrophysics • session 7: the future
