2. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Mandli Communications, Inc. Established in 1983
Industry leader in cutting edge technology research and development
Over two decades providing high quality systems and services
Systems, software and service crews ready to deliver
3. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Measuring Sign Retroreflectivity PROBLEM - rapidly determine sign reflectivity for a large number of signs
SOLUTION - make automated sign reflectivity measurement an integral part of sign inventory creation
RESULT - a two person crew can go from measuring 80-100 signs per day using existing methods to possibly measuring over 5,000 per day using the RetroView™ active sensor system
4. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ Mobile Platform Vehicle continuously flashes the high-intensity light sources
B/W cameras simultaneously capture images
Light flashes are emitted at a rate of two per second
Vehicle travels at posted highway speeds
5. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ Color Camera View
6. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ Low Intensity Grade Camera View
7. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ High Intensity Grade Camera View
8. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Testing at TTI December 14-15, 2004 Mounted RetroView™ test system on mobile platform using Mandli vehicle
Only 1 light source used giving approximately one pulse of high intensity light per second instead of the standard two pulses
Tested system moving at various speeds on different types of road signs
Testing at TTI shows consistent results on collection of data by the RetroView™ system
9. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation TTI RetroView™ Testing System 2 cameras side by side
1 low intensity grade camera
1 high intensity grade camera
1 light source
Emits high intensity light roughly once per second
Light is not visible to human eye, poses no safety hazard
10. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ Mobile Platform at TTI testing - December 14/15, 2004
11. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroCurve™ results for SEG speed limit sign
12. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroCurve™ results for SEG speed limit sign
Results match TTI’s measurement for Coefficient of Retroreflectivity
Full Retroreflectivity curve is generated, not just the 0.2/-4 measurement
Confirms repeatability on each different test pass
Pass-to-pass accuracy variation of under 5%
13. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Intensity Results for Six Trials on 3M VIP Speed Limit Sign
14. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Results for 3M VIP speed limit sign
Results confirm repeatability at 3 different speeds
Confirms Intensity measurement repeatability on each different test pass
15. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Intensity Results for Six Trials on Avery Prismatic Speed Limit Sign
16. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Results for Avery Prismatic speed limit sign
Results confirm repeatability at different speeds
Confirms Intensity measurement repeatability on each different test pass
LTI hand held devices cannot reliably measure prismatic materials
17. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ TTI sample images of SEG speed limit sign - 12/15/04
18. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Advantages of RetroView™ SAFETY
All data collection is automated inside the service vehicle
No hand held measuring devices are used
No need for personnel to be outside vehicle in or near moving traffic
Collection is done at highway speeds, traffic is not slowed down
19. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Advantages of RetroView™ COST EFFECTIVE
Reflectivity can be determined for all signs with a single pass of the vehicle
Only 2 people are needed to collect data on thousands of signs daily compared to 80-100 daily via hand held devices
Statewide assessment of sign reflectivity can be performed in months, not years
Foreground and background sign reflectivity can be determined for all assets with the same data set
20. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation Advantages of RetroView™ REPEATABLE RESULTS
RetroView™ has accuracy of +/- 10% for reflectivity measurements
TTI testing confirmed same results from multiple passes
System mounted on same point on mobile platform, collecting from same point on vehicle for every sign
System is efficient collecting consistent data at any posted speed limit
21. January 10, 2005 2005 TRB Presentation RetroView™ Tentative Deployment Schedule December 2004 - Confirmed viability with testing at TTI Riverside Campus in College Station, TX
Spring 2005 - Planning pilot project with Tennessee DOT
Spring 2005 - Planning pilot project with Pharr District of Texas DOT
Spring 2005 - Upgrade current RetroView™ system to include collection of Pavement Marking Retroreflectivity
Summer 2005 - System available to collect RA on 100,000 signs per month
