  1. 2/1 Hon. obj To review your main ideas about Arab Empire and then create caricatures of various Muslim conquerors.

  2. The Arab Empire After the death of Muhammad in 632 AD Muslims chose a new leader called a caliph which means successor

  3. Rightly Guided Caliphs Abu Bakr and other Caliphs spread Islam to other places of the world. North Africa, Egypt, Persia, and Palestine. Ruled Medinah

  4. The Umayyads • Reorganized rules and classes in 661AD after death of Ali. Reorganized government. Mu’awiya moved capital to Damascus=Umayyad Dynasty-now caliph hereditary title. Made Arabic official language, built mosques, first Arab money, postal service, encouraged the arts. Two groups formed Shi’ah (Shi’ites believe caliph descendent of Ali/Muhammad) and Sunni.

The Abbasids • First 100 years of rule (750-1258AD)known as the Golden Age of Islam; built new capital at Baghdad; created government position of vizier; Baghdad became the center of trade and learning. Arab means someone of empire who spoke Arabic. • Translated Greek writings into Arabic. (math) Advancement in leisure, new farming techniques

  6. Carpets • Carpet – sought after in Islamic market • Used for prayer, mosques, palaces, tents • Exported for trade

  7. The Golden Age of Muslim Spain • Moors (Berbers & Arabs) 710 AD defeated W Goths, Religious freedoms ensued. • Rich culture united Jews, Christians and Muslims. Height of learning in Cordoba-Alhambra in GranadaE:\Islam\cordobaalandulasia.asf (PNI) • Khazars(Rus & Mongol Jews) -brought back spices & silks to Spain

  8. Islamic Life • Quran, Mosques, • Men vs Women (killing female children common) • Muhammad preached raising a female = paradise-after Islam women’s rights improved • Knowledge & travel valued-memorize Koran-boys received higher education
