  3. Objective 4 - • Writs of Assistance – easily attainable license to search anywhere – very different from a search warrant • Sugar Act – Duh! Persons accused of smuggling were to be tried in admiralty court • Stamp Act – paper goods needed stamp – 1st time non-imports were being taxed (1st direct tax)

  4. Quartering Act – Colonists were responsible to house and feed British soldiers • Declaratory Act – repealed sugar, but stated that Parliament can make any law it wants.

  5. Townshend Duties • Added power to the crown by using revenue to pay British Officials salary • Tax on glass, tea, and paper • Random search and seizure

  6. Circular Letter • James Otis and Samuel Adams • Petition Parliament for repeal of Townshend Acts • Conduct Boycotts again Result: British Officials threatened to shut down Mass. Legislature British sent more troops into Boston

  7. C of C – Started by Sam Adams to share information about potentially threatening British activities • Coercive Acts – closed the port in Boston, sent British Officials to England to face trial, and limited power of Mass. legislature

  8. Lexington and Concord • Shot heard ‘round the world! • British Troops lead by General Gage attempt to take colonial supplies and move into Concord • Troops are met with gunfire by minutemen and British are stunned by untrained colonists

  12. The Battle of Saratoga • Plan by British (Gens. Howe and Burgoyne) to cut off Colonial Army in New England by bringing British Soldiers down from Canada. • Howe got distracted in Philadelphia and didn’t hold up his end of the deal! • Surrender at Saratoga October, 1777. • The French take notice!

Surrender at Yorktown • By 1781, Washington pushed the Redcoats towards Yorktown (VA) where General Cornwallis was caught between the Continental Army & the French navy • On October 19, 1781 Cornwallis surrendered; the English still controlled NY & Charles Town but the fighting virtually ended

  15. Treaty of Paris - 1783 • Britain recognizes the independence of the United States. • Boundaries are west to the Mississippi; north to the Great Lakes; south to Florida.
