CORE and You Important Things To Know About Our Program
The CORE Community • As a member of the Cleveland CORE community, we expect students to: • treat each other respectfully. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying! • maintain academic integrity. We have a zero-tolerance policy for cheating! • keep our environment neat by picking up trash, recycling where possible, and cleaning up after yourselves. We have a zero-tolerance policy for messiness!
Magnet Code of Ethics You have chosen to be a member of a learning community that is committed to achieving the highest level of excellence, which can only be achieved in an environment that requires intellectual honest and personal integrity; maintains trust and respect; and cultivates responsible citizenship. • Please carefully read the Magnet Code of Ethics. • Return a signed copy in the first week of school.
Parent and Student Expectations • Parents and students should check ENGRADE (online grading program) regularly! • Students should talk to their teachers during nutrition or lunch to discuss questions or concerns! • Parents should email teachers with questions or concerns!
Magnet Grading • The grades that appear on progress reports are used to show progress in each CORE period. • The grades shown on the final 20-week report cards are composite grades derived from all disciplines.
5-Week Progress Report • English – grade for English class • Geography – grade for the side of CORE (AR or SI) that you started on • Genetics – grade for science class
10 & 15-Week Progress Reports • English – grade for English class • Geography – combined grade for AR and SI • Genetics – grade for science class
20 Week Final Report Card • Genetics – grade for science class only • English and geography – students receive the same composite grade in each of these classes • What goes into the composite grades? - Each CORE class (including science) - Both IUE grades for that semester - Grade for advisory curriculum
The I.U.E. • Each unit and all of the CORE classes (English, AR, SI, and Science) focus on a specific theme. • At the end of each unit, students write an Interdisciplinary Unit Essay on the unit theme using the content they have learned.
Interdisciplinary Events • Luncheons • Field Trips • Student Leadership Conference (mini United Nations addressing the global water issue)
Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences • Parents will be notified if a student has a D or Fail in Core on the five-week progress reports. • Meetings with parents will be scheduled for Tuesday mornings at 7:30 for students with a D or Fail. Any student who Fails both semesters of ninth grade CORE will need to repeat ninth grade CORE the next year.
