  6. North Views • The North was focused on city life and their industrial society. • After the Louisiana Purchase, the North wanted the land to be made up of free states. • They were for the abolition of slavery and tried to gain sympathy for their abolitionist movement.

  7. South Views • The south was very reliant on the cotton crop, therefore also dependent on slavery. • After the United Stated gained land from the Louisiana Purchase, the south wanted that land to be slave territory. • They were against the abolition of slavery and had strict consequences for slaves who tried to run away.

  9. Fort Sumter • Officially started the Civil War • Open fire, although no soldiers were killed • A call to arms from both sides • After a Confederate victory, Abraham Lincoln sought out more volunteers for the war.

  10. Shiloh • Ulysses S. Grant vs. P.G.T. Beauregard • Took place in Southwestern Tennessee • 2 day battle • Bloodiest day in American History • Considered to be America’s introduction to the “total warfare” part of the war • Union victory

  12. 2nd Bull Run • John Pope vs. Robert E. Lee • Stonewall Jackson ordered an attack on a federal column that was passing across his Warren Turnpike • Pope proceeded to attack • Confederate victory

  13. Gettysburg • George E. Meade vs. Robert E. Lee • Took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania • Largest and most costly battle in United States History • 3 day battle • Take down of Meade’s army= turning point in the war • Union victory boosted their confidence

  16. Common Challenges of Soldiers • Poorly trained • Inadequately fed • Poor housing conditions • Lacked proper medical care • Had no access to sports, entertainment, etc.

  17. African-American Soldiers • Made up 10% of the Union Army • Only free black men could enlist as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation • Due to Racial Prejudices, most Blacks were given non-combat jobs such as cooks and laborers. • Paid less than white soldiers

  19. Emancipation Proclamation • Issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 • Granted freedom to slaves under Union control • Allowed black soldiers to fight for the Union • Tied the issue of slavery directly to the war • Purpose was to restore peace and Union control in the Civil War

  20. Gettysburg Address • Given by President Abraham Lincoln • Dedication ceremony to honor the soldiers who died in the battle of Gettysburg, which turned the tide of the war to the Union. • Although it was only a 2 minute long speech, it is the most quoted one in American History
