  1. Math 5Area and Fractions Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will learn how to calculate the area of objects when one side is a fraction.

  3. Write three fractions that are between ½ and 1. Math Warm-up

  4. Write three fractions that are between ½ and 1. There are many answers to this - some are 2/3, ¾, 7/8, 9/10, 4/5, 4/7. As long as the fractions you wrote are greater than ½ and smaller than one whole, then it is correct. Math Warm-up - ANSWER

  5. In this lesson we will answer the question: How do you find the area of an object if one of the measurements is a fraction?

  6. Vocabulary Review factors - numbers that are multiplied to get a product 7 × 7 = 49 product - the number that is the result of multiplying two or more factors 7 × 7 = 49

  7. Vocabulary Review fraction – a symbol, such as ¾, used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is divided into equal parts. A fraction can name a part of a whole, a part of a set, a location on a number line, or a division of whole numbers.

  8. Vocabulary Review numerator - the number above the fraction bar in a fraction denominator - the number below the fraction bar in a fraction numerator 1 2 denominator

  9. Vocabulary area - the amount of space inside the boundary of a flat (2-dimensional) object such as a triangle, rectangle, or circle.

  10. Connecting to Previous Learning In Math 3 and 4, you learned how to calculate the area of rectangles using tiles and the equation length x width (l x w). We will continue this work in this lesson.

  11. Connecting to Previous Learning Find the area of this rectangle. 24 meters 4 meters Area = 24 meters x 4 meters = 96 meters

  12. The home builder needs to cover a small storage room floor with carpet. The storage room is 4 meters long and half of a meter wide. How much carpet do you need to cover the floor of the storage room? Use a grid to show your work and explain your answer.

  13. In the grid below I shaded the top half of 4 boxes. When I added them together, I added 1⁄2 four times, which equals 2. I could also think about this with multiplication 1⁄2 x 4 is equal to 4/2 which is equal to 2.

  14. Use an area model to solve the following:

  15. Document Camera Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page.

  17. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice 2.

  18. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Use an area model to solve the following: 3) 4)

  19. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Mary and Joe determined that the dimensions of their school flag needed to be 1 1/3 ft by 2 ¼ ft. What will be the area of the school flag? 5.

  20. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice 6. Mrs. Bennett is planting two flower beds. The first flower bed is 5 meters long and 6/5 meters wide. The second flower bed is 5 meters long and 5/6 meters wide. How do the areas of these two flower beds compare? Is the value of the area larger or smaller than 5 square meters? Draw pictures to prove your answer.

  22. Lesson Review Draw a picture. Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. Simplify.

  23. In your Math Notebook Quick Check 1)

  24. In your Math Notebook Quick Check Use an area model to solve the following: 2)

  25. In your Math Notebook 3) Explain why a) when multiplying a factor by a fraction greater than 1, the number increases and b) when multiplying a factor by a fraction less the one, the number decreases. Use the following problems to help with your explanation. a) 3 x 3/2 b) 3 x 2/3 Quick Check

  26. In your Math Notebook Quick Check - ANSWER 1. 4

  27. In your Math Notebook Quick Check - ANSWER

  28. In your Math Notebook 3 1 3 2 9 2 1 2 3. a) 3 x 3/2 = x = = 4 The product is larger than the first factor because you are multiplying by a whole number, plus a fraction more of the product. I know that when a number is multiplied by a whole number, it is bigger. So, if a number is multiplied by a whole number, plus a fraction more, it must get larger. Quick Check - ANSWER

  29. In your Math Notebook 3 1 2 3 6 3 3. b) 3 x 2/3 = x = = 2 The product is smaller than the first factor because you are taking a fraction (just a part of) the factor. I could reword the problem to 2/3 OF 3, which tells me that the product will be less than 3. Quick Check - ANSWER

  30. Good Work with this lesson. Today you learned how to calculate areas with fractions.
