Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class Circulatory System
Cardiovascular System • Made up of the Heart, blood vessels and blood • Carries needed materials to cells (oxygen) and carries waste products away from cells
Heart • Heart-Muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body • Each time the heart beats it pushes blood through the vessels of the cardiovascular system. • Valve- A flap of tissue that prevent blood from flowing backward inside the heart.
Heart • Atrium- receives blood that comes into the heart. • Ventricle- Lower chamber. Pumps blood out of the heart into the body.
Heart Parts • Arteries- Carry blood away from the heart (O2 rich) • Veins- Carries blood to the heart. • Capillaries- Any vessel where substances are exchanged between blood and body cells.
Heart Health • Pacemaker- put inside the body. Controls the need for O2 • Blood Pressure- The force in which the valves shut. • Hypertension- Higher blood pressure than normal
Lymphatic System • Network of vein like vessels that return fluid to the bloodstream. • Lymph nodes- Small nodes of tissue- traps bacteria. • Lymph nodes may enlarge when they are helping the body fight infection.
Heart Health • Cardiovascular health can be maintained by strengthening the heart muscle through regular exercise. • Eating Right
