Location/Structure • Attached to the Hypothalmus by the Infundibulum. • Lies at the base of the brain. • Sometimes called the master gland of the body. • Small oval and oval shaped. • All other Endocrine glands depend on its secretions for stimulation.
Effects • Promotes growth • Stimulates secretion of thyroid hormones • Stimulates secretion of glucocorticoids • Milk production • Control of the reproductive function
Common complications • Tumors • Pressure on the optic nerve ( may cause vision problems) • Low blood pressure, low body temperature, dry skin, fatigue, memory problems, growth retardation (in children), loss of postpartum lactation, loss of menstruation, breast atrophy, loss of libido
