Give us the back-story!

T.R.’s Square Deal May 1902, United Mine Workers strike • Demand better wages • Winter nears, no resolution = no coal T.R. intervenes • Forces arbitration – • A settlement in which an impartial 3rd party decides on a legally-binding solution • His Threat • Army will control the mine • Resolution called a “Square Deal” for both sides • Miners get 10% raise, reduced work hours • Management does not have to recognize the union

Anti-Trust Activism Sherman Anti-Trust Act (1890) • Old trend: not consistently enforced Dissolution of the Northern Securities Company • A “Holding Company” – buys up smaller co.’s to create a monopoly • Under T.R. NSC accused of violating S. A-T Act Reversing the trend • Some 42 anti-trust actions under T.R. • Included: • Beef trust, Standard Oil, American Tobacco, etc.

  5. Grappling with Standard Oil T.R. was not anti-business, but believed the government should regulate them. He did not wish to destroy trusts which did not harm the public.
