Pop Quiz (iClicker Time) • SCENARIO: A new faculty member begins an appointment effective July 1, 2010 and is eligible for full benefits. She visits AYSO and opts out of coverage. Her family will not be arriving in southern California until August 15. She is covered for medical, dental and vision through her spouse. Her spouse’s coverage will end on August 31st. The family will need to enroll in UC’s coverage. • QUESTION: Will the employee be eligible to enroll herself and family when coverage is lost through her spouse?

Unemployment Insurance (UI) Overview • Administered through the CA Employment Development Department (EDD). • Claimants are eligible: • Unemployed through no fault of their own. • Position in which UI taxes are paid. • Physically able to work and are looking for employment. • Benefits are based on wages earned during base period (12 months) from when the claim was filed. • Claimants can receive from $40 to $450/week.
Unemployment Insurance (UI) Overview (cont’d) • Claimants can collect up to 99 weeks of benefits. • Even longer in enrolled in a re-training program. • EDD is the “Final Arbiter” : • UCI can protest the eligibility of claimants • Misconduct, voluntary separation, special categories. • EDD will make final eligibility determination. • EDD will determine weekly UI benefit amount. • Claims can be appealed to California Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board (CUIAB) • Special Categories of “employees” have different rules: • Furloughs; Lay-offs; Student Employees
