In Massachusetts, advocates have worked successfully with lawmakers to: • Pass the 2006 Health Reform Law • to provide nearly every resident in • the state access to quality, • affordable health care. • Increase the state excise tax on • cigarettes to $2.51 to prevent youth • from smoking and help smokers • quit. • Make Massachusetts smoke-free. • Require health insurance coverage • of clinical trials. • Pass a federal law to allow the U.S. • Food & Drug Administration to • regulate tobacco products, which • could reduce nicotine levels and • crackdown on ads to kids!   2. WHAT COULD WE DO IN MASSACHUSETTS? VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES MAKE CANCER A TOP PRIORITY • Cancer touches us all. Together with millions of volunteers, the American Cancer Society calls upon our federal, state and local governments to partner with us in the battle against cancer by: • • Supporting research, prevention, • and early detection programs • • Expanding access to quality, • affordable health care • • Reducing health disparities • Eliminating suffering from • tobacco-related illness • Become an advocacy volunteer to make sure fighting cancer is a top priority of our lawmakers! • Join our ACS CAN grassroots army at • acscan.org/massachusetts • Share your personal experiences with • cancer and any barriers you or your • family faced to get needed care • Meet with your elected officials • Call or write your lawmakers • Respond to “action alerts” online • Testify at local or state level hearings • Speak to groups about the Society and • ACS CAN’s advocacy efforts and • recruit others to join us and take action • Submit letters to the editor to your • newspaper • Vote! Ensure Access to Colorectal & Prostate Cancer Screenings:Pass state laws to require health insurance coverage of recommended colon and prostate cancer screenings backed by evidence-based research. Prevent Youth Tobacco Use: Equalize the state tax on cheaper, kid-friendly tobacco products (like chewing tobacco) with cigarettes.
