  2. What is Merit Money ? • Merit money is another word for scholarship money. • Students get scholarship money because they earn it, not because the need it • Scholarships are a way that colleges entice exceptionally well qualified students

  3. Merit-based money is based on: • Academic merit—ACT/SAT; GPA • Music/Arts • Talent • Athletics • Leadership • Extracurricular activities

  4. Most merit money comes from the colleges themselves • Concentrate effort here • Go to the college’s website and search under “Prospective Students” and then “Financial Aid and Scholarships.” • The more selective a college, the less merit money it is likely to offer

  5. How do I apply for this money ? • Through the application for admission LSU, Louisiana Tech • Through a separate application ULL, NSU • A combination of both Tulane, Rhodes • By nomination Emory, Washington University in St. Louis

  6. Managing deadlines is essential • LSU—Nov. 15 • NSU—Dec. 1 • ULL—Nov. 15 • Tulane—Nov. 15; Dec. 1; Jan 15.
