He was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, in the Kingdom of Württembergin the German Empire. His father, Herman Einstein who was a salesman and engineer, and his mother Pauline Einstein. When Albert was less than a year old, his family moved to Munich, where his father and uncle foundedElektrotechnischeFabrik J. Einstein & Cie, a company that manufactured electrical equipment based on direct current. Albert was raised in a non-observant Jewish household Albert Einstein at 7 months
As a child… • Albert began learning at a Catholic elementary school from the ages of five to eight. • Then his parents transferred him to a Luitpold Gymnasium, where he finished his secondary education. He remained at this school until his family decided to move out of Germany. • Even though Albert Einstein had problems with his speech growing up, he still managed to excel in every school he attended.
The Young Philosopher • When Albert was young, his father showed him a compass. - He immediately noticed that there was something more complicated causing the needle of the compass to move. • His father’s company began to fail causing the family to move to Italy.
The Young Philosopher • As he grew, Einstein built models and mechanical devices for fun and began to show a talent for mathematics. -Albert’s father recognized his talents and wanted him to pursue a career in electrical engineering. • In late summer 1895, at the age of sixteen, Einstein took the entrance examinations for the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich. - He failed to reach the required standard in several subjects, but obtained exceptional grades in physics and mathematics. • He attended the Aargau Cantonal School in Aarau, Switzerland, in 1895 to 1896 to complete his secondary schooling.
First Marriage • Albert Einstein’s first wife was named MilevaMarićand they got married in January of 1903. • -Before the couple got married • they had a daughter named • Lieserl in 1902, but she died in • 1903. • They had two sons • - Hans Albert Einstein • - Eduard Einstein • Marić and Einstein divorced on February 14, 1919; having lived apart for five years.
Second Marriage • Einstein married Elsa Löwenthal on June 2 1919. • The two had a relationship since 1912 when Albert was still maried to his first wife. • She was Albert’s first cousin maternally and his second cousin paternally. • Elsa Einstein was diagnosed with heart and kidney problems and died in December 1936.
E = mc2 While Einstein was writing a paper on mass-energy equivalence, he came across a theory on how to calculate energy. He created an equation,E = mc2. The equation set out to find the existence of "rest energy", and the basis of nuclear energy (the conversion of matter to energy by humans and in the cosmos).
Quantized atomic vibrations • In 1907 Einstein proposed a model of matter where each atom in a lattice structure is an independent harmonic oscillator. In the Einstein model, each atom oscillates independently – a series of equally spaced quantized states for each oscillator. Einstein was aware that getting the frequency of the actual oscillations would be different, but he nevertheless proposed this theory because it was a particularly clear demonstration that quantum mechanics could solve the specific heat problem in classical mechanics. Peter Debye refined this model.
Photons and energy quanta In a 1905 paper, Einstein postulated that light itself consists of localized particles. Einstein's light quanta were nearly universally rejected by all physicists, including Max Planck and Niels Bohr. This idea only became universally accepted in 1919, with Robert Millikan’s detailed experiments on the photoelectric effect, and with the measurement of Compton scattering. Einstein concluded that each wave of frequency f is associated with a collection of photons with energy (hf) each, where h is Planck's constant.
Death • Died on April 17, 1955 in the U.S. • He died because of internal bleeding caused by the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. • He died at the age of 76
