  3. Symmetrical (adj) • When cut in half it is the same on both sides • A butterfly’s wings are symmetrical.

  4. Symbol (n) • Something that represents or stands for another thing • An American flag is a symbol for freedom.

  5. Sympathy (v) • Sharing the feelings of another person • When Jenna’s dog died I felt sympathy for her and cried.

  6. Symphony (n) • When instruments come together to form a musical piece • Beethoven's fifth symphony is very powerful. Symphony

  7. Synthetic (adj) • Artificial and man made • Astroturf is a very common synthetic material.

  8. Synchronize (v) • Happening at the same time • Our synchronized swimming routine won us the championship.

  9. Photosynthesis (v) • When light and chemicals come together in a plant to grow. • Without photosynthesis, my plants are brown.

  10. Synopsis • A short summary (n) • I read a synopsis on War Horse and figured I’d be good for the summer reading quiz.

  12. Associate (v) • If something is associated with something else, they are connected or related in some way. • I always associate McDonald’s with “I’m lovin’ it”.

  13. Classify (v) • If you classify things, you organize them into groups based on their attributes. • Classify shapes according to their number of sides.
