Lord of the flies ~ Chapter. 10 The Shell and the Glasses Done by Shi Tian 2O326 Clarence Sim 2O327 Johnathan Thor 2O328
Conversation between Piggy and Ralph, who were both bruise and sore, as they notice everyone, except SamnEric and a few littluns, joined Jack’s tribe. At the castle rock, Jack ties and beats Wilfred up for no reason and manages to convince the others that the beast may come again. Ralph and Piggy realized that they were involved in the dance and participated in the killing of Simon but tries to convince themselves that they were not involved.
The boys went to sleep, but woke up hearing Jack, Maurice and Roger advancing on them. They thought that it was the beast. He organizes a raid with Maurice and Roger to steal Piggy’s glasses so as to get fire for their feasts and rituals. Ralph, Piggy and Samneric realizes that they could not possibly get the fire burning all the time with only the few of them and agreed that the fire be lighted every morning.
The hunters launch the attack and there was so much of thrashing and kicking involved amongst the boys that the shelter collapsed. When the hunters left and the four boys recover, they realized that the hunters had not come for the conch but for Piggy’s glasses (for feats and rituals)
Setting/Mood • Starting: It is solemn. • The green light and the glossy patches of sunshine played over their befouled bodies. (Pg 192) • End: It was calm and eerie • An oblong of darkness relieved with brilliant spangles hung before them and there was the hollow sound of surf on the reef. (Pg 202)
Law and Order(Civilization) VS. Savagery • They had created a killing mechanism –shows savagery • Robert leaned lightly on the lover and the rock groaned. –Pg196 • Law and order could not fully be established, was unstable. • The fragile white conch still gleamed by the polished seat. –Pg 191
Law and Order(Civilization) VS. Savagery • Still possesses self-consciousness and reflected upon their actions (even when they’re savages). • Law and order still present in the boys although they were affected by savagery. • In the silence that followed each savage flinched away from his individual memory. –Pg198
Law and Order(Civilization) VS. Savagery • Represented stealing in the modern world • Morally wrong, yet they still continued with their actions. • Savagery prevails and win over law and order • We shall take fire from the others. –Pg 199
Law and Order(Civilization) VS. Savagery • It is considered to be a savage event when the masses joined in the killing of Simon • Sam twisted and the obscene word shot out of him. “-dance?” –Pg 195
Law and Order(Civilization) VS. Savagery • Even Ralph, who strongly supports the conch to instill a sense of order, forgets about rescue. • Shows that he is losing consciousness of civilization and losing hope as well • Ralph tried indignantly to remember. –Pg 201
Leadership- Jack • Jack did not planned for his actions, displaying bad leadership qualities. • When proposed a hunting to be made next day, he did not consider how the fire would be lit. • Did not prioritize / plan properly • The Chief’s blush was hidden by the white and red clay. –Pg 198
Leadership- Jack • Rules with absolute power. His hunters obey him with strict obedience, the kind which was never paid to Ralph. • “Some of you will stay here to improve the cave and defend the gate. I shall take a few hunters with me and bring back meat. The defenders of the gate will see that the others don’t sneak in ---” (pg 197)
Leadership- Jack • Everyone regarded him as a true chief by using the manipulation of fear. • “The chief led them, trotting steadily, exulting in his achievement. He was a chief now in truth” (pg 207)
Leadership- Ralph • Determined Leader • “We’ve got to keep it [the fire] going.” (pg 201) • “Oh yes. So we’ve got to make smoke; and more smoke ---” (pg 201) • Uncertain • He had to depend on Piggy; he was not sure of what to do next after the killing of Simon. • “What we going to do?” (pg 192)
Character analysis –Ralph • Defenseless, scared • He admitted the 2 main uses of the fire – to attract any ship to come rescue them; as comfort so that they can sleep • “Certainly one was to send up a beckoning column of smoke; but the other was to be a heart now and a comfort until they slept.” (pg 199) • “feeling curiously defenseless with the darkness pressing in” (pg 202)
Character analysis –Ralph • Afraid to the extent he was desperate to go home. • “I’m frightened. Of us. I want to go home. O God I want to go home” (pg 194) • Selfish - so scared of the “beast” that he wished he was safe. • “Desperate, Ralph prayed that the beast would prefer littluns.” (pg 205)
Character analysis –Ralph • Easily influenced, joined in the killing of Simon • Guilty for what happened that night • Not sure why he did so • “I wasn’t scared”, said Ralph slowly, “I was --- I don’t know what I was.” (pg 193)
Character analysis –Jack • Does things without reason • “He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up” (pg 196) • Sensitive - Regarded Ralph and his group as danger • “They’ll try to spoil things we do. So the watchers at the gate must be careful. And then ---” (pg 197)
Character analysis –Jack • Displays savagery – still believes in the beast’s existence • “No! How could we --- kill --- it?”(pg 198) • “I expect the beast disguised itself” (pg 198) • No respect for others at all, he robbed them at night for Piggy’s glasses • “We shall take fire from the others[Ralph and his group]” (pg 199)
Character analysis –Piggy • Escapes from truth - unable to confront his role in Simon’s death • “It was dark. There was that --- that bloody dance. There was lightning and thunder and rain. We was scared!” (pg 193) • “That’s right. We was on the outside. We never done nothing, we never seen nothing.” (pg 194)
Character analysis –Piggy • Convincing- convinced Ralph who was scared and guilty to think that they were not at fault of the murder of Simon. • “We was scared!” said Piggy excitedly “Anything might have happened. It wasn’t --- what you said” (pg 193) • “It was an accident,” said Piggy suddenly, “that’s what it was. An accident.” His voice shrilled again. “Coming in the dark --- he [Simon] hadn’t no business crawling like that out of the dark. He was batty. He asked for it” (pg 193-194)
Character analysis –Piggy • Intelligent- Since they had little manpower to keep the fire lit, he suggested that they only light it up in the day • “We can light it every morning,” said Piggy. “Nobody ain’t going to see smoke in the dark” (pg 202)
Character analysis –Piggy • Realized there is a need to be rescued quickly; they can no longer hang on much longer alone. • “if we don’t get home soon we’ll be barmy” (pg 203) • Still believes in order • “You’re still Chief” “You are. Over us” (pg 192)
Character analysis –Samanderic • No perseverance - Wanted to give up. • (can be forgiven as they were still very young) • Does not realize the importance of keeping the fire lit. • I’m too tired. And what’s the good (pg 201)
Symbolism- Conch • Loses its power and the importance • “hands-up” system slowly disintegrated. • Symbolic power fading, the conch shell is merely an object. • I though they wanted the conch (Pg207) • They didn’t take the conch (Pg207)
Symbolism- Signal fire • Rescue fire and a morale booster. • Certainly one was to send up a beckoning column of smoke; but the other was to be a heart now and a comfort until they slept.” (pg 199) • Gave them courage/warmth • We don’t want another night without fire. (Pg 199) • Fire used for cooking. • What we use for lighting the fire? (Pg 199)
Symbolism- Piggy’s glasses • The need for science • From the left hand dangled Piggy’s broken glasses. (Pg 207) • Logical reasoning – see things in another perspective. • Nowadays he sometimes found that he was more clearly if he removed his glasses and shifted the one lens to the other eye.” (Pg191)
