Astronomy popularization/education programs are conducted in Kerala, south India for university, school students and public; before, during and beyond IYA 2009.
Activities & Co-ordination Activities are mainly co-ordinated by the IUCAA Resource Center (IRC) which is a regional node of the Inter University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune India. IUCAA visiting associates are sphere- heading activities at other centers. Currently there are 74 visiting associates in IUCAA.

The regional pool of Resource persons • IUCAA provides support in the form of men and material for the implementation of these programmes • A strong group of regional resource persons comprising of research students, college and school teachers has been built up in Kerala under the IRC.

SUMMARY • Astronomy education and development programs for university, schools and public are conducted at various places in Kerala, with support from IUCAA, Pune through its regional arms ,the IUCAA Resource Centers (IRC). • Several programmes conducted in Kerala by a network of IUCAA associates as local resource persons and the research scholars in the region as volunteers before, during and beyond IYA 2009. • Faculty members from IUCAA , other astronomy institutions and astronomers from international institutes/organisations visit and give lectures at the various universities/colleges. • The university students are given training in latest astronomy softwares and Virtual Observatory, during the workshops • A new structured model for astronomy popularisation in the grass-root level involving synergy between academic and administrative bodies, “ Sasthragramam” is successfully implemented in a district during IYA2009 and beyond in collaboration with semi-governmental organisation ‘Kudumbashree”.
