Complex GHS Hazard Classification and Documentation Made Simple, Safe and Secure By Professionals

The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals created by the UN is meant to create a uniform system of classifying and labelling chemicals, their use, storage, transport and handling along with other safety measures. It is expected countries will implement this method to ensure consistency and greater safety of human life and the environment. To see more visit:<br>https://icsds.com/solutions/ghs/

  1. Complex GHS Hazard Classification and Documentation Made Simple, Safe and Secure By Professionals The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals created by the UN is meant to create a uniform system of classifying and labelling chemicals, their use, storage, transport and handling along with other safety measures. It is expected countries will implement this method to ensure consistency and greater safety of human life and the environment. GHS hazard classification system is complex and has been revised a few times. Manufacturers and dealers covered by local laws and regulations are required to prepare new safety data sheets or modify existing MSDS to conform to the UN designated classification system.

  2. In simple terms the classification system is split into two main parts physical hards covering explosives, gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizing substances, toxic substances, radioactive substances and corrosive substances. Health hazard part addresses toxicity, skin corrosion, irritation, eye damage, respiratory damage and carcinogenicity among other factors. The environmental hazard part relates to aquatic toxicity. The GHS classification system becomes even more complex in the case of mixtures. Some chemicals that were previously considered not hazardous are now under the purview of the classification system. The existing MSDS may not include all details or even if they do, such information may not be in a form that is easily and quickly understood even by workers on the shopfloor. SDS includes standardized, globally recognizable pictograms. This is but one aspect. Communicating hazard through pictograms and other methods is an important criterion of the GHS classification method. This means manufacturers or dealers must give full disclosure. There is the attendant risk of having to disclose confidential trade formulation secrets, which naturally the manufacturers may not wish to do. The wording of communication phrases should be simple enough and unambiguous in order to avoid confusion. Even in countries where English is the medium of communication, there are idiosyncracies in the use of language and phraseology.

  3. Capability and knowledge of the latest updates to GHS classification is one thing. There are instances where a manufacturer or a dealer may require the SDS to be modified or created within a short time. In such cases, experience and knowledge of experts in preparation of SDS and conformity to GHS norms in any country according to local regulations comes in useful. There is no error in arriving at the right item code in classification. There are no errors in the SDS.
