Part A: Counting kernels -using cardboard representations of multi-colored corn ears, count and record the number of dark and light kernels on Ear A and Ear B -fill in the chart and determine ratios Part B: Determining Parents’ Alleles Complete the Punnett Squares to show the results of different parental crosses and determine which parents were most likely for your ears of corn Answer the Analysis questions

  3. Activity 2: Selective Breeding and Natural Selection -read the information about selective breeding, Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel and answer the Analysis question.

Positives and Negatives • Positives: - cardboard corn ears are easy to count and store - nice simple demonstration of basic genetic principle of dominance • Negatives: - connection to selective breeding (title of lab) is almost nonexistent - refers to a gene as being made of 2 alleles - typo of B instead of D for gene symbol
