Pick up a Telescope Quiz on the front table. • You have five minutes to complete it. • Please submit to your class In-Box.
List characteristics of the electromagnetic spectrum. • Describe how the electromagnetic spectrum is arranged. • Compare & Contrast mechanical & electromagnetic waves.
Terms • Wavelength • Frequency • Medium • Crest • Trough • Amplitude • Transverse Wave • Radiation
Can you imagine trying to keep food warm with a flashlight? How about trying to tune in a radio station on your TV? • How is electromagnetic radiation different?
How is electromagnetic radiation different? • Light & radio waves are both E.M. radiation, but each has properties that make it useful for some specific purpose.
Characteristics of EM Waves • All Electromagnetic (EM) waves travel at the same speed • All EM waves travel in wavelengths • Each EM wave travels at different frequencies.
Transverse Wave • Crest-Highest point of a transverse wave. • Trough-Lowest point of a transverse wave. Crest Trough
Transverse Wave • Amplitude-Distance between the midpoint of the wave and the crest. • Measure of how much energy the wave is carrying Crest Amplitude Trough
Wavelength • The distance a wave travels in one cycle. The distance between two crests or two troughs. Wavelength Wavelength
Frequency • The number of waves that pass a given point in one second. • Measured in Hertz=wavelengths/second Crest Trough
Work in pairs & complete the questions to show how the EM Spectrum is arranged.
Similarities of Mechanical & EM Waves • Both are measured the same way • Transverse Waves • Wavelength • Frequency • Both transfer energy from one place to another
Differences between Mechanical & EM waves • Mechanical waves need a medium to move through. • EM waves can travel through a completely empty space.
Medium-Matter that is disturbed by energy. • Chains of vibrating molecules through the medium. • Kinetic energy moving the molecules; however, after passing the molecules come to rest in the same spot.
List characteristics of the electromagnetic spectrum. • Describe how the electromagnetic spectrum is arranged. • Compare & Contrast mechanical & electromagnetic waves.
