  4. Bulletin Board Service • Bulletin Board Services are discussion groups focused on specific topics. • Allowing posting of notices • (UCSC bus stops) • Providing ongoing discussions CE80N -- Lecture #11

  5. Electronic Bulletin Boards • An electronic bulletin board service combines the features of many communication mechanisms: • Allows anyone to post • Conventional bulletin board • Distributes to many subscribers • Newspaper • Focuses on single topic • Club CE80N -- Lecture #11

  6. Electronic Bulletin Boards • Propagates messages quickly • Similar to electronic mail • Informal discussion groups • Users listen to conversations, asks questions, interjects comments • Can be much like a social gathering CE80N -- Lecture #11

Many, Many Bulletin Boards With Diverse Topics • Electronic bulletin boards cover a widely diverse group of topics. • Ranging in: • Knowledge required to participate • Number of participants • New groups are easily created. • AKA • Computer discussion group • Computer conference service CE80N -- Lecture #11

  8. Network News (Netnews) • A newsgroup is a bulletin board in a netnews system. • An article is a message in a newsgroup. • Headers similar to email • From, Subject, etc.. CE80N -- Lecture #11

  9. USENET • Loose consortium of network news sites • All sites participate in the exchange of network news. CE80N -- Lecture #11

  10. Newsgroup Names • The netnews system assigns each newsgroup a unique name. • Separated by periods • Group.subject.topic • Example: • rec.sport.baseball • Comp.std.wireless • Alt.sex.bondage CE80N -- Lecture #11

  12. Obtaining Network News • The user must have: • A computer participating in network news • Newsfeed or connection to network news service • News Server • Software to read articles • News reader (client) CE80N -- Lecture #11

  13. How Network News Appears To A User • An article appears in the same form as electronic mail message. • Includes a Header • From • Date • Subject • Has a Body • Text message from sender CE80N -- Lecture #11

  14. Checking For News Articles • Network news does not notify user of new activity in a newsgroup. • User checks newsgroups regularly • Keeps activity record in the software. CE80N -- Lecture #11

  15. Article Expiration • Network news articles are erased after a specified number of days. • 10 days – 2 weeks CE80N -- Lecture #11

  17. Selecting Articles • News reader allows user to read article by: • Prompting user • Articles are displayed one screenful at a time. • Using Space bar to bring up next screen • (or the scrollbar in web browsers) CE80N -- Lecture #11

  23. Redundant Newsfeeds • Some sites have a backup newsfeed to avoid losing articles during failures. • Software detects duplicates • Stores only one copy of each article CE80N -- Lecture #11

  24. Netnews And Electronic Mail • The same software can be used for netnews and e-mail. • Netscape, Internet Explorer.. • Message formats automatically convert from one to the other. CE80N -- Lecture #11

  28. Internet Etiquette • Do not make assumptions about the author. • Choose your words carefully. • Use constraint. • Do not take insults personally. • Use emotion icons such as smiley face :-) • Uppercase is SHOUTING • Ask for help if you are a novice CE80N -- Lecture #11
