Linear Functions MsChalkley Unit 2 Lesson 1
How can I find slope? From a graph: count the rise over the run From a table, find the average: change in y change in x From two points find the difference in values. Y2-y1 X2-x1 From an equation, y=mx+b, the slope is the m value.
Intercepts Y intercept: (0,y) From a graph, estimate where the line crosses the y-axis. From a table, locate a (0, y) point or plot the data points and extend the line to estimate where the line crosses the y-axis. From two points, locate a (0, y) point or plot the data points and extend the line to estimate where the line crosses the y-axis From an equation in the form y = mx + b , the y-intercept is the b value. From other equations, plug in 0 for x and solve for the y value.
Intercepts X intercept: (x,0) From a graph, estimate where the line crosses the x-axis. From a table, locate an (x, 0) point or plot the data points and extend the line to estimate where the line crosses the x-axis. From two points, locate an (x, 0) point or plot the data points and extend the line to estimate where the line crosses the x-axis. From an equation, plug in 0 for y and solve for the x value.
Equations of Lines Standard form: Ax +By = C No Fractions A is always positive A,B, and C have no common factors (simplest form)
Equations of Lines Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b M is the slope of the line B is the y intercept
Finding Slope of a Line Given the slope (m) and y-intercept (b), write the equation of the line by plugging the values of m and b into the slope-intercept form.
Finding the Slope of a Line Given the slope (m) and a point (x, y), use y = mx + b and plug in the slope and the x and y values of the point to solve for the y-intercept (b). Write the equation of the line by plugging the values of m and b into the slope-intercept form.
Finding the Slope of a Line Given a table of values, find the slope, use y = mx + b and plug in the slope and the x and y values of one point to solve for the y-intercept (b). Write the equation of the line by plugging the values of m and b into the slope-intercept form.
Special Cases For Slope When is the slope of a line undefined? When is the slope of a line zero? Parallel lines have the same slope. Perpendicular lines have negative reciprocals slope.
Perpendicular Line Test If you multiply the slope of two lines and the product is -1, then they are perpendicular. m1 * m2= -1
