  1. making plastic bag yarn: a slightly sloppy tutorial upcycled “yarn” you can use to knit or crochet! FROM Bags! hooray! by allison @ practicallyplasticless.wordpress.com

  2. step 1: lay your bag out on a flat surface. flatten.

  3. step 2: cut off the handles and very bottom of your bag. I like to save these parts and put them in homemade cat toys, but you can recycle them instead.

  4. please note the not cutting through! step 3: cut bag into 1-1.5” strips horizontally. STOP about 2” from the edge. DO NOT cut into loops. it’s like a little hula skirt!

  5. Step 4: rotate the bag so that you can see the uncut part of the bag. Cut diagonal lines between your strips. For example, to get to your first horizontal cut, cut diagonally from the uncut edge of the bag. It’s confusing to write out. Look at the picture. … notice the lines that I drew on the bag to diagonally connect the strips. This is helpful when you’re learning but unnecessary later.

  6. Keep cutting…

  7. You should end up with one long strip of plastic bag. It’ll look something like this.

  8. Then, wrap it around your hand to make a skein or ball.

  9. and now, knit/crochet away! cutting more bags as necessary!
