2. Singularis och pluralis • Singularis betyder ental a day, an idea • Pluralis betyder flertal many bikes, ten children • De flesta substantiv har en regelbunden pluralisform med ändelsen –s eller –es one hat – two hats one kiss – many kisses

3. Observera stavningen! • De flesta substantiv får alltså ändelsen –s, men om ordet slutar på ett väsljud (något som låter som ett s-ljud) måste man använda ändelsen –es one church two churches one witch many witches om ordet stavas med –e i slutet lägger man bara till –s one race – many races uttalas alltid [-iz]

4. Om substantivet slutar på konsonant + y blir ändelsen –ies one baby – many babies om ordet slutar på vokal + y läggs –s till one toy – many toys • Om substantivet slutar på –o bildas pluralis oftast med –s one kilo - many kilos one photo – many photos

5. Några substantiv som slutar på –o får ändelsen –es one potato – many potatoes one hero - many heroes one tomato – many tomatoesm.fl. • Sammansatta substantiv får ibland –s på första delen och ibland på andra baby-sitters take-offs sisters-in-law passers-by

6. Oregelbunden pluralis • Precis som i svenska (jfr. bok-böcker) har engelskan många substantiv med oregelbunden pluralis t.ex man men woman women child children ox oxen foot feet tooth teeth goose geese mouse mice louse lice

7. Några substantiv som slutar på –f eller –fe får pluralisändelsen –ves half halves calf calves knife knives leaf leaves life lives loaf loaves shelf shelves thief thieves wife wives wolf wolves

8. Övriga substantiv som slutar på –f och –fe bildar pluralis helt normalt med –s one proof - many proofs one belief - many beliefs one safe - many safes

9. Samma form i singularis och pluralis • En del substantiv har samma form i singularis och pluralis t.ex. one sheep - many sheep one fish - many fish (fishes avser olika fisksorter) one deer - many deer one salmon - many salmon one Swiss - many Swiss one Portuguese - many Portuguese

10. Låneord får speciella pluralisformer • Några exempel crisis – crises basis – bases series – series species – species phenomenon - phenomena medium – media curriculum – curricula stimulus - stimuli fungus - fungi/funguses

11. Singularis i svenska – pluralis i engelska • En del substantiv som vi i svenska uppfattar som singularis behandlas som pluralis i engelska t.ex. scissors (sax) glasses (glasögon) pyjamas (pyjamas) binoculars (kikare) scales (våg) overalls (overall) pants (byxor) tongs (tång)

12. Även dessa behandlas som pluralis contents (innehåll) looks (utseende) surroundings (omgivning) steps (yttertrappa) stairs (innertrappa) braces (hängslen; tandställning) ashes /cinders (aska) customs (tull) wages (lön) the Middle Ages (medeltiden) manners (uppförande) oats (havre)

13. Kom ihåg att ett verb eller pronomen som hör ihop med dessa böjs som i pluralis These scissors are mine. They are not yours. Those pyjamas are new. They are on the bed. • Om man vill betona att det är ett bestämt antal säger man t.ex. one pair of scissors is … , two pairs of scissors are …

14. Alltid pluralis! • People, police och cattle (boskap) räknas som pluralis i engelskan There are many people in this bus. The police are here. The cattle were taken out in May.

15. Pluralis i svenska – singularis i engelska • Dessa räknas som pluralis i svenska men som singularis i engelska. t.ex. business (affärer) news (nyheter) furniture (möbler) homework (läxor) knowledge (kunskaper) information (upplysningar) money (pengar) advice (råd)

16. Följaktligen böjs verben i detta fall i singularis och pronominet är i singularis. No news is good news. My money is on the table. Can’t you see it? Your advice has always been good. This furniture is new. It was quite expensive. • Om man vill prata om ett råd, en möbel etc. , säger man a piece of advice, a piece of furniture

17. Ämnesnamn och sjukdomar • Dessa har plural form med –s men räknas som singularis t.ex. mathematics matematik statistics statistik politics politik cards kort(spel) darts (pilkastning) measles (mässling) mumps (påssjuka) • Om resultatet avses, räknas substantiven på –ics som pluralis Jfr: Statistics is a difficult subject./ Statistics show that men are …

18. Family, crowd, team … • Ord som family, crowd, team, crew, staff, jury etc. räknas som singularis om man ser på dem som grupp the crew has a meeting today • Om man tänker på de enskilda individerna i gruppen räknas de som pluralis the jury are out
