  3. Olympic Rings • Symbolizes the highest level of excellence in Sports • Represents friendship across the FIVE different continents of the world • At least one of the five colours can be found in every nations’ flag of the world

  4. Olympic Flag & Doves • Doves are released at the start of each Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games • Reminder everyone that the Games should be played in an atmosphere of PEACE

  5. Olympic Motto Citius, Altius, Fortius Faster, Higher, Stronger • Used to be the three main criteria for judging • Other judging criteria include : body control, style, difficulty of movement

  6. Olympic Message The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.

  7. Olympic Flame • Symbolizes endeavour for perfection, the struggle for victory, peace and friendship • Ignited by the rays of the sun reflected off a mirror

Olympic Torch • Transported from the ancient site of Olympia, Greece to the hosting country of the Olympic Game • Torch relay is passed from person to person • Fire from the torch is used to light a huge flame in the stadium during the Opening Ceremony • Flame distinguished at the Closing Ceremony

  9. Olympic Host Countries • 1896 - the first modern Games host by Greece • 1916, 1940 & 1944 – no Olympic Games due to the two World Wars • 1960 – first Olympic Game to be hosted by an Asian country (i.e. Japan) • 2000 – Largest Games with 200 participating countries
