DETAILED SURVEY & MODERN TECHNIQUES BY S. K. DATTA, GM (Projects)
DETAILED SURVEY: 1. Take all the R.L all along the line. 2. In hilly and undulated terrain R.L along the side slope is to be taken. 3. Take all geographical details upto 50m on either side of the route alignment. 4. Take all the details of P&T Lines, Power lines, River, Mallows, Airport, Navigational details. 5. Soil investigation is needful then carry out. 6. Collect all details of the Police stations, Mandal offices, Collector, Hospital, Telephone connections, pattern of crop, Monsoon / Rain pattern.
7. Collect & record the details of water table 8. Collect information about Metal, Sand, probable source of cement , steel etc. 9. On completion of survey prepare a complete report. 10. Take the ground resistively readings along the route. 11. Plot the profile based on the R.L taken and also draw the plan details of 50m either side of center line of the route.
LOCATING TOWER ON PROFILE: 1. Study the Tower spotting data thoroughly. 2. Obtain a sag template to spot the Tower on the drawn profile. 3. Spotting should be done to maximize the design margin i.e., average utilization should be nearest possible to the ruling span. 4. Utmost care should be taken to select the footing of towers. 5. Check the max. and min. weight span of each Tower based on Hot and Cold curve of the Sag template. 6. Care should be taken for avoiding any uplift on the suspension Tower.

Modern methods of TL Survey: Electronic Distance Measuring technique (EDM). Accuracy to the tune of 1PPM. Total Station - Measures the distance and angle through measuring technique in one system. Global Positioning System (GPS). Geographical Information System (GIS). Remote Sensing Technique. Air Born Terrain Mapping technique.
