Basic Geography • Size- 439,736 Sq miles • Capital- Bogota • Major/ Important land forms- Ande Mountains and Cordilleras • Countries and bodies of water that border Colombia- North- Caribbean Sea, NE- Venezuela, SE- Brazil, SW- Peru + Ecuador, W-Pacific ocean, NW- Panama • Climate- Tropical wet, Tropical wet and dry, and Semiarid.

  3. Basic Geography • Natural Resources- Petroleum, natural pas, coal, iron ore, nickel, gold, copper, emeralds, hydropower.

Demographics & Economy • Population-44,222,000 • Infant mortality rate-19.51 • Literacy rate-90.4% • GNP/GDP-$399.4 billion • Government and leadership- republic, executive branch dominates government structure • Currency name- Colombian peso • Exchange rate-Colombian pesos (COP) per US dollar - 2,243.6 (2008), 2,013.8 (2007), 2,358.6 (2006), 2,320.75 (2005), 2,628.61 (2004)

History • Independence Movement & Leaders: Colombian independence, Leader- Simon Bolivar July 20 1810 • Conflict with other countries: Ecuadors president Rafael Carria Appears to be keen for a war with Colombia. • Important Events And Leaders: Colombian independence, Leader: Simon Bolivar, The war of a thousand days, the assassination of Gaitain, Colombia’s 1991 constitution.

Society • Dating And Marriage Customs: the candle ceremony is a traditional Custom in Colombian Christian weddings. • Couples choose to live together before or instead of marriage • Marriage ceremonies generally follow catholic traditions • Fathers provide for his family mothers are responsible for most of the affairs of the home • Child has two family names

Current Issues • The paradox with Colombia is that it always struggled it has always managed to keep its economic and head above water • Deforestation, soil and water quality damage from overuse of pesticides , air pollution, especially in Bogota, from vehicle emissions • To fix the issues our opinion- clean the water , stop using pesticides get rid of the products that cause pollution less vehicles emissions.
