THE IMPORTANCE OF DESIGN “… Mastery of Design … is now the main way for individuals and firms to stand out in a crowded marketplace”Daniel Pink
REPORT TO THE PRESIDENT “PREPARE AND INSPIRE: K‐12 EDUCATION IN STEM FOR AMERICA’S FUTURE” Executive Office of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology 2010 RECOMMENDATION: • “Provide programs and facilities that let students DESIGN and CREATE their own devices and machines such as through access to sophisticated fabrication capabilities.”
DESIGN • Sketching • Teamwork • Engineering • CAD • Infusion of STEAM • Additive Manufacturing (AM)
SOLIDWORKS • SolidWorks Certification - CSWA: • Teachers • Students • Google Sketch-Up as an option
ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING- AM • Process of making objects from 3D model data • Build parts layer upon layer • Opposite of subtractive manufacturing • methodologies
Product Design Studio II Computer Aided Drafting / 3D Drafting & Design Advanced Technologies Internship Product Design Studio I Engineering & Design-UC Production Design Robotics I Robotics II PATHWAY 9
PRODUCT DESIGN STUDIO-I Fall 2010 • Course Format • 180 hrs • STEAM-Standards based • Project-based • Studio projects in multiple materials/process • Rooted in the Design Process 10

INDUSTRY & AM • Trek Bicycles: “Trek used Solidworks software to reinvent the bicycle design process, enabling designers to work smarter and faster and design a better product.” • Burton Snowboards: “Brings the best designs to market with the help of 3D printing.” • Economist Magazine: “ A technological change so profound will reset the economics of manufacturing…revolution may not be too strong a word.”
ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING • Through additive manufacturing, it will become technically feasible, economically viable, and commercially beneficial to locally produce goods that are person-specific, location specific, and/or event-specific. • A new, thriving type of digitally-enabled physical-product entrepreneurship (digiproneurship) will emerge. Brent Stucker, Assoc. Professor, Utah State University
