  1. Software Demonstration: PowerPoint Presented by: Marjorie Ruschau, Benjamin Shum, and Allison Yantz

  2. Starting PowerPoint • Not all computers come with PowerPoint installed, so begin by checking the programs on your computer. • Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 is the most recent release. • PowerPoint 2007 is different from previous versions due to the “ribbon” interface at the top of the application. • Additionally, PowerPoint files are saved in .pptx format in 2007 instead of .ppt as it was in previous versions.

  3. Selecting a Template Design • Click on the Design tab on the ribbon to view specific designs. • You may now select any design you feel is appropriate to your presentation, if any.

  4. Tips for Choosing Typeface • Program will automatically select a typeface, but that might not be right for your presentation. • Choose a simple and legible typeface that goes with your topic.

  5. Some Examples: • Times New Roman – Most common in books. • Arial – Very simple, modern look, might work for something on technology. • Brush Script – Makes type look like handwriting, not a good choice as too hard to read quickly. • Broadway - Good for something theatrical. • Old English Text – Might be good for a history presentation.

  6. Typefaces, continued • Once you pick a style, you should keep it consistent throughout your presentation to avoid confusion. • However, if you want some variety, choose a typeface that has variations of regular, bold, etc. too. • For example: • Arial • Arial rounded bold • Arial black

  7. Color • You can choose to use color but stay away from too many colors unless the presentation is for children. • Most adults prefer blue if you are going to choose just one other color.

  8. Animating Words • To view animation options, you can select the Animations tab on the ribbon menu. • Click on “Custom Animation.” This will open a side panel to the right of your screen to display animation options. • Highlight the text you wish to animate, and then click on “Add Effect” in the Custom Animation side panel. • There are four major types of animation: • Entrance • Emphasis • Exit • Motion Path

  9. Different Insertion Options • Located in the middle of a new slide, there are six icons with different insertion options. Insert Table Insert Chart Insert SmartArt Graphic Insert Picture from File Insert Clip Art Insert Media Clip

  10. Automatic Slide Show • Under the “Slide Show” tab on the menu, you can choose options for automatic slide show. • Selecting “Set Up Slide Show” will open the “Set Up Show” display box. • In this display box, there are many options for configuring automatic slide show options.

  11. PowerPoint Conclusions • PowerPoint is a powerful tool to present text and images in interesting ways. • Selecting good font types, styles, and colors will enable stronger presentations. • Addition of picture, sound, and video makes PowerPoint more “exciting.” • PowerPoint is only as innovative as you can make it. Have fun!
