Geography of Japan • Japan is an island nation in Asia. • Comprising a large archipelago extending along the Pacific coast of Asia. • The main island is referred to as the "Home Island“ • There are also about 3,000 smaller islands, including Okinawa • Japan's total area is about the size of the original 13 colonies.
Natural Disasters • Volcanoes: There are 40 active volcanoes located in Japan • Earthquakes: There are about 1500 earthquakes per year in Japan. Only a few have been very severe. • Tsunamis: These are under sea earthquakes that cause great tidal waves

Agriculture • There is a shortage of farmland. • However, the Japanese have found ways to farm. • Rice paddies occupy most of the countryside • Lower slopes of mountains are planted with wheat, barley, sweet potatoes, beans, peas, etc.
