  1. SDZ Construction:Javelin Anti-tank Missile Inter-service Resident Range Safety Course (Intermediate)

  2. August 2003

  3. August 2003

  4. Constructing the Javelin SDZ • Construct the SDZ for a Javelin guided missile firing an HE warhead into steel. • Information about this weapon system and its SDZ can be found by referring to DA-PAM 385-63, Chapter 15, paragraph 3 and Figures 15-10, 15-11 and 15-12. August 2003

  5. Legend for the Javelin August 2003

  6. Plot the launch point and the firing line. • Plot the target. • Establish the missile target line. August 2003

  7. From Figure 15-10, Chapter 15-3 find Distance X for the Javelin missile. 4000m • Distance X = • Annotate Distance X on the legend. Distance X August 2003

  8. To establish the right and left trajectory limits, refer to Chapter 15-3 and find the angle for a missile with the fly out probabilities of 1 in 1,000,000. Distance X • The trajectory limit angle = 21° • At the launch point, measure 21° from the left and right of the missile target line. 21° August 2003

  9. Draw tic marks. Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits • From the launch point, draw straight lines through the tic marks out through Distance X. • This establishes the left and right Trajectory Limits and defines the Impact Area. Distance X 21° August 2003

  10. Area A is 500m wide for HE warhead rounds from the launch point to a point 1000m downrange. Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits • The remaining downrange portion of Area A tapers down to a 200m width for HE warhead rounds at Distance X. • From the firing line, measure 1000m downrange. Distance X 1000m August 2003

  11. Lightly draw lines perpendicular to the trajectory limits between the firing line and 1000m downrange. Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits 1000m • Draw tic marks at 500m as shown. Distance X • Draw straight lines through the tic marks from the firing line out past the 1000m measurement. August 2003

  12. At Distance X, measure 200m out from the trajectory limits and draw tic marks. Impact Area 1000m • Draw straight lines from where the last line drawn intersects the 1000m line out through the tic marks as shown. Distance X August 2003

  13. Place needle of the compass at the launch point and scribe an arc between the trajectory limits. Use Distance X as the radius. Area A Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits 1000m Distance X • This completes Area A. • Annotate Area A on the legend. • Erase unnecessary lines. August 2003

  14. Place needle of the compass at the launch point and scribe an arc through the tic marks between the trajectory limits. Area A Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits 1000m • In Chapter 15-3, the measurement stated for Area B = 500m • Lightly draw a line extending the missile target line. • Place a tic mark at the measurement for Area B. Distance X August 2003

  15. Area B Area A Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits 1000m • This completes Area B. • Annotate Area B on the legend. • Erase unnecessary lines. Distance X August 2003

  16. Area B Area A Impact Area Left and Right Trajectory Limits 1000m • This completes Area B. • Annotate Area B on the legend. • Erase unnecessary lines. Distance X • This SDZ requires an Area F to the rear of the launch point. August 2003

  17. 25m 100m Note: Scale for Area F is 1:750 • Locate the launch point and the baseline. • From the launch point, lightly extend the missile target line 100m, the measurement of Caution Area 3. • From the launch point, place a tic mark at 25m from the baseline, the measurement of the Primary Danger Zone. August 2003

  18. 30° 30° 100m 25m • Scribe an arc from the 25m tic mark to the left and right sides of the baseline. • From the launch point, measure 30° from to the right and left of the extension of the missile target line. • Draw tic marks. August 2003

  19. 25m 35m 30° 30° 100m • Draw straight lines through the tic marks. • Measure 35m down from the launch point for Caution Area 2 and draw a tic mark. • With the needle of the compass in the launch point scribe an arc through the tic mark as shown. August 2003

  20. 25m 35m 30° 30° 100m • Place the needle of the compass in the launch point and using the length of Area F (100m) as the radius, scribe an arc as shown. August 2003

  21. Primary Danger Zone Caution Area 2 Caution Area 1 Caution Area 3 25m 35m 100m • Annotate the Primary Danger Zone. • Annotate Caution Area 1. • Annotate Caution Area 2. • Annotate Caution Area 3. August 2003

  22. Legend for the Javelin August 2003
