The ABC’s of PBIS. The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. Four critical features. 1. Clear expectations 2. Recognition system 3. Corrections 4. Data-driven decisions. Clear expectations! (Safe, respectful, responsible).

The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.

Clear expectations!(Safe, respectful, responsible) • Expectations: Commonly defined Consensus amongst staff Taught and re-taught Monitored for, recognized, corrected (can’t leave any of these out!) No matter how redundant or obvious it may sound, don’t assume students OF ANY AGE understand them! (“They should know it by now”… but maybe they don’t!)
Recognition! Reinforcement and the use of positives! (this is not just a “ticket” program!) • Positive relationships, positive role models, positive environments, positive interactions… • Giving at least 4 positives to each negative (many students get an abundance of negatives at home…) • Creating a culture of “thank you for doing the right thing”
Corrections! • PBIS is not meant to replace discipline, just reduce the need to use it • Punishment doesn’t work(“Punishment doesn’t work when most everything in someone’s life is already punishing.”Jeff Sprague) • We want to build up an intrinsic core value – not to do good because someone is watching but to do it because it feels good! The most difficult students have a high tolerance for our punishments…
Data-driven decisions“The most efficient and durable strategy for changing a system is to provide regular reports on valued outcomes”Thomas Gilbert, 1978 • It’s important to have consensus about what constitutes a referral/definitions of behavior • Referrals are not punishments! Teachers can handle behavior but ODR’s/referral slips are absolutely needed to create data about behavior!! • To make good decisions, we need good data… …. “ So our decisions aren’t based on our last worst day!”George Sugai
