Sesame • Start at the end: • 2008/2009 sales $270,000 direct to the US • 2009/2010 up to $2.3 million • 6-10 containers a month for a year. • November rate is 200CFA a kilo in local market Bani • At the same period we were paying 275CFA • The end result is $350K-$400K more into the hands of Burkinabe sesame farmers
Sesame • Why sesame? • World demand up, marginal land, short growing season, planted in addition not in lieu, lined up a buyer, prior work experience. • PC is in every part of the chain. • Established a relationship with a US based hummus wholesaler, Dean Brocke, Inc. • Partnered with an RPCV ‘middle man’ • Located a S-42 Corridor • Partnered with ADF for financing • Five PCVs working closely with sesame
