1. Dearborn Fire Department Emergency Response Guidebook Training

2. Objectives • To be able to quickly pull information to make decisions at the initial phase of a Haz/Mat incident • To explain what each section of the ERG is and how to use that section. Practical • 10 questions test will be given. • Work together to answer the questions. • All answers will be found in the ERG.

3. WHAT IS THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDEBOOK? • It is primarily a guide to aid first responders in quickly identifying the specific or generic hazards of the material(s) involved in the incident, and protecting themselves and the general public during the initial response phase of the incident.

5. WHITE SECTION • Is a informational section on how to use the book and general response to Haz/mat Incidents • This section has a description of each of the sections. pgs 2-5 • Safety Precautions pg 6 • Who to call for assistance pgs 7-13

10. Yellow Section • This is a index list of dangerous goods in numerical order of ID numbers • This section quickly identifies the guide to be consulted from the ID Number of the material involved. • This list displays the 4-digit ID number of the material followed by its assigned emergency response guide and material name. • Example ID # Guide # Name of Material 1090 127 Actone

Yellow Section Example • NOTE • If entry is highlighted and there is NO fire, go directly to the Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances • If there is a fire involved go to Guide Number • Also, the letter “P” following the guide number identifies those materials which present a polymerization Hazard under certain conditions • Polymerization is often an exothermic process (one that evolves heat). • If polymerization begins when it is not desired, the result could be a fire or explosion.

Blue Section • This is a index list of dangerous goods in alphabetical order of material name. • This section quickly identifies the guide to be consulted from the name of the material involved. • This list displays the name of the material followed by its assigned emergency response guide and 4-digit ID number. • Example Name of Material Guide # ID # Sulfuric acid 137 1830

Orange Section • This section is the most important section of the guide book. • It provides all safety recommendations on the left side and emergency response guidance and activities for fire situations, spill or leak incidents and first aid on the right side. • Each Guide is divided into three sections. • Potential hazards – with the highest potential listed first. • Public Safety • Emergency response

Green Section • This section contains information on how to use this section and two tables. • The first table provides two different types of recommended safe distances which are “Initial isolation distances” and “Protective action distances”. • The next table is the Water-Reactive Materials which contains a lists, by ID number of TIH ( Toxic Inhalation Hazard) materials which produce toxic gases upon contact with water and the chemical gas which is produced.
