Current Design Graphic Est. Girth: 108” (2.7m)
Design Status • Design Requirements: IAW ASME design competition. • Target market: disaster relief victims, single user. • Show-stopper: Power requirement to evaporate 200 mL H2O (268 W) exceeds human power input (150 W). • Component Analysis: • Condensation experiment demonstrates that vapor condenses on its own, no condenser necessary. • Pedal-power will provide primary work input. • Generator needed to convert mechanical E→ electrical E?
1) Find Wattage outputs for: rowing machine, stationary bike, hand crank. SELECT best option. Result: Based on McConnell’s Rolfs workout, STATIONARY BIKE selected as source of human-derived power. May attempt to add hand crank if more power is desired.
2) Calculate energy required to evaporate 200 mL H2O. Result: • Pressure reduction appears ineffective in reducing power requirement. • Must find method of reducing power requirement below human work • input.
3) Research viable options for reducing boiling temperature (adding chemicals, vacuum pump, etc.) ID most feasible option. Result: • Dr. Lappin claims a pressure-reducing VACUUM could potentially reduce boiling temperature to 50 – 60 °C. • Further analysis/experimentation of water aspirators and insulation needed.
1) Research generator connections from rotating shaft and to heating coils. ID three generator brands that could meet design requirements. Approach: • Meet with Mr. Brownell • Research various company catalogs online
2) Reach decision on whether to include a pressure-reducing vacuum in design. Approach: Set up experiment in NSH using water aspirator to test boiling temperatures at various pressures. (Thursday)
3) Select type of heating source (plate, coils, etc.) Approach: • Take apart and analyze available hot pot • Research market online for various products • Possibly run experiment for different coil configurations?
