Outcomes of the CEDE review “Laboratories for the 21st Century” Dr Lynda Gibbins and Dr Glynis Perkin
Effective laboratory based learning and teaching practice • Economic climate, rising student numbers • Role of lab work; employer expectations • Students’ views • Success factors and issues for rebuild/ refurbishment • Lab-based academic practice • The future for laboratory-based L&T • Impact of technology
Our approach • Literature review including virtual, remote, hands-on laboratories • Project aided by colleagues from The Open University • Case studies and synopses from other institutions detailing their laboratory practice
Some key points • Despite the emergence of remote and virtual laboratories, hands-on labs are still perceived to be essential • Trend to larger, shared, flexible spaces • Shared technical support and equipment • Shared facilities can lead to cross-disciplinary projects and collaborative working
Overview of today’s workshop Mark Endean and Keith Williams
Overview of today’s workshop • Examples of virtualisation of laboratory activities • Opportunity for delegates to engage with a remote laboratory • Small group work: • analyse your own practice • explore options for change • review your options for change • Concluding panel discussion
Desired outcomes • Participants to review and reflect on their own practice and that of other attendees • Community of practice between attendees • Attendees to formulate an action plan: • to what extent can virtual practical work beused to change your own institutional practicefor the better?
