History • Created by tobacco treatment providers in Western MA with MTCP funding and support in 1995 • Designed to meet the needs of clients who needed more intensive treatment—“just lock me up.”
Model Is Replicable • Western MA held 5 retreats 1995-2001 • North Shore MA held 9 retreats 2000-2002 • South Shore MA held 4 retreats 2000-2002
Weekend To Quit Model • Led by Tobacco Treatment Specialist • Orientation session—1 week before retreat • Retreat—Friday evening through Sunday afternoon • Two follow-up sessions—Monday and Tuesday evenings • Reunion session—3 to 4 weeks
Components of Retreat • Registration/application • Preparation/stages of change education (homework) • Nicotine replacement therapy (75%) • Large and small group sessions • Individual counseling • Group hypnosis/setting goals
Components—continued • New games • Yoga Sessions/nature walks • Nutrition • Acupuncture • Uses effective and comprehensive treatment strategies • After-care support groups and follow-up

High Abstinence Rates North Shore—9 WTQ Retreats 202 Participants (153 female/49 male) Stay Quit Rates 1 month 54-86% 6 months 36-58% 1 year 37-50% (Western and South Shore had similar quit rates)
Cost Effective Model With grant funding—Cost to client $75 to $300 depending on program Without grant funding—Cost to client $400-900 depending on program Compare with high quit rates and cost of cigarettes per year
