Learning in Simulations By: Melina Akins EDER 679.13 Topic Presentation: March 11, 2003
Perspective, • Perceptions, • Learning Opportunities
Perspective Situated Learning (Lave and Wegner) • Peripheral participation • Central participation
Ecological Perception • Emphasis: an active process
Our perception of the environment is base on our interaction with the objects, agents and events we encounter in that environment. • The phenomena of Anthropomorphism is influential in the formation of that perception.
Anthropomorphism • anthropomorphism is the tendency for people to think of inanimate objects as having human-like characteristics. If you have ever named your car, talked to your computer or begged your printer to work, you are guilty of assigning anthropomorphic characteristics to a machine.
Learning Opportunities • Affordances • Authentic Activity • Active, Incidental and Situated learning. • Situated Learning
Situated Learning • Apprenticeship • Collaboration • Reflection • Coaching • Multiple Practise • Articulation of learning
What examples of the following types of learning do you think exist in simulations? • Authentic Activity • Active Learning • Incidental Learning
Food For Thought! Stimulation Through Simulation? • Educational implications? • Consumer implications? • Design implications?
