  1. "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor Overview of Planning LCG-PEB Dec 12, 2001 Lucas Taylor Northeastern University

  2. Organisation of “CPT” Project Manager David Stickland Technical Coordinator Lucas Taylor Chief Architect Vincenzo Innocente "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor 3 CMS projects • Each with project manager in CMS Steering Committee • Single Joint Technical Board • Cross-Project Task Forces as required This presentation concentrates on CCS

  3. Project Planning • Subproject coordinators (level 2) • Hierarchical task breakdown (level 3) • Deliverables of each task (level 4) • Schedule and milestones • aligned with detector and trigger activities • Resource estimates • Loaded schedule (esp. SW engineers) http://cmsdoc.cern.ch/cms/cpt "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  4. Level 3 tasks (I) Resources generally flow through CERN/IT and regional computing centres/institutes Some central coordination required to guarantee a coherent and effective distributed system "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  5. Level 3 tasks (II) "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor November 2001: New task added for Grid Integration

  6. Deliverables and Resources • Attach deliverables & resources to tasks, e.g. • 6 Level 2 tasks (+ nascent “Grid Integration” task) • 33 Level 3 tasks • > 200 deliverables (some are really support tasks) "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  7. CPT Level 1 Milestones Physics TDR 3yr 2yr 2yr 1yr LHC beam "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor Reported to and reviewed by CMS and LHCC

  8. The next 18 months "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor Support DAQ TDR (Beam-3yrs) Baseline software for TDR’s: CCS & Physics

  9. CCS and Physics TDR’s "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor 5% data challenge CCS TDR (Beam-2yrs) Physics TDR (Beam-1yr)

  10. 20% Data Challenge and Commissioning "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor 20Hz challenge (Beam-1yr) Prod’n software (Beam-9mnth) 20% system (Beam-3mnth)

  11. Support of DAQ / Physics groups "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  12. Data Challenges: MC productions and data analysis "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  13. CMS Production Systems Total today: ~ 1000 CPU’s ~ 30 TBytes being analysed "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  14. Common Prototypes: 2002-2004 20% Data Challenge Physics TDR CCS TDR DAQ TDR CERN prototype is a time-shared facility available for ~30% of the time at full power for CMS • Data challenges must satisfy DAQ/CCS/Physics milestones "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor Some (~50%) of current T2 prototypes primarily for GRID related R&D.

  15. Core Software Manpower (Oct 2001) Shortfall of ~10 FTE’s in 2002 "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor Needed 2003 (11) Needed 2002 (10) CURRENT Current numbers in AFT are over-estimates (fractional people, not all focused on urgent needs)

  16. Software Manpower +10 Required in 2002 • N.B. Core software only • Excludes: • regional centre operations • physics software development • Context: ~80 Physicist Users / Developers in 2001 • Serious shortfall in Core Software manpower • As recognised in numerous reviews, incl. Hoffman, LHCC, US-DOE/NSF • Milestones are at risk "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor

  17. Core Software Manpower (Oct 2001) Significant efforts from CMS to obtain manpower resources • Strong support from CERN and USA (DOE and NSF) • Weak response from others • iMoU proposed in April but generally disfavoured (shelved) • Now acting bi-laterally (recent pledges from India and UK/GridPP) "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor CERN counting also includes 50% of each Project Associate

  18. Summary • Detailed planning process in use for complete project • Hierarchy of tasks, deliverables, milestones, resource-loaded schedule, annual reviews,… • Large computing systems needed from today onwards • Both for R&D and to support (large) physics/DAQ studies • Already > 10 regional centres are operational • Manpower problems of Core Software remain critical • 2002: ~10 additional people • 2003: ~10 more additional people • We rely on LCG to help provide common elements • We anticipate that some CMS-dedicated manpower will be provided by the agencies via LCGP "CMS Planning", Lucas Taylor
