  3. Purpose • Train engineers in general performance debugging • Improve deployment of Internet2’s end-to-end performance tools • Better NTP configurations • Train engineers in the use of the tools • Provide an opportunity to configure and use the tools and ask questions

  4. Purpose • Intended to be given regionally, with attendance from university and gigapop engineers that typically don’t attend major conferences • This venue was, of course, different with participation from folks across the US, Canada, and around the world

  5. Description of Workshop:Timing • Two days • First half of first day is optional, • Allow attendees the time, and the opportunity to ask for help, and to configure machines to be used as measurement nodes (operating systems, NTP, and installing the measurement software)

  6. Description of Workshop:Initial Presentations • Network Measurement Tools • General debugging techniques • Policies and Procedures • Concerns with deploying a measurement infrastructure • Understanding and Configuring NTP

  7. Description of Workshop:Internet2 Toolset • For each tool, describe • What it is • How to configure • Use examples • The tools: • NDT – Network Diagnostic Tool • OWAMP – One-way Active Measurement • BWCTL – “Bandwidth Control”, a framework for throughput testing • Hands-on session with tools (a “practical”)

Description of Workshop:Conclusion • Organizational Impact • Thinking about how to integrate the tools with your operational procedures • Futures: measurement frameworks • What we are doing within Internet2 • Joint work between Internet2 and the GEANT2 JRA1 project (currently called “perfSONAR”).

Post-workshop Attendee Stories • Canadian participants found two different problems using NDT: • System doing interrupt coalescing: causing problems with a commercial tool and NDT • Remote system with inadequate buffer size • Existed for a long time • NDT provided proof needed to spur reconfiguration

  11. My view of outcomes • Positive reaction from attendees • Attendees were able to test into Abilene • Required keys for bwctl nodes • Leave with the ability to test as needed in the future • Generated interest • Intent to do larger deployments at home • Interest to have further workshops

  12. My view of outcomes • Questions and suggestions from audience help guide tool development • Also community creation: a venue where engineers can meet others and exchange ideas

  13. Looking Forward to Tokyo • Transpac2, Internet2, and APAN are interested in holding a workshop at APAN 21 in Tokyo • Tailored to APAN network capabilities • Some of same tools are deployed • Also a large AMP deployment • If you have any suggestions, please let me (us) know
