Wicklow Data Analysis Metrocount Data
Summary of Metrocount Data • Data Captured Between 29/11/07 – 07/12/2007 • Vehicle count – 142260 (both carriages) • Max recorded speed – 156.3kph • Mean speed – 75.0kph • 85%ile – 86.0kph
Summary of 3M Data Southbound • Data Captured Between 01/04/08 – 08/04/08 • Vehicle count – 42102 • Entrance Speeds • Max recorded speed – 170kph • Mean speed – 80kph • 85%ile – 90kph • Average Speeds • Max recorded speed – 164kph • Mean speed – 79kph • 85%ile – 88kph
Summary of 3M Data Northbound • Data Captured Between 01/04/08 – 08/04/08 • Vehicle count – 27597 • Entrance Speeds • Max recorded speed – 158kph • Mean speed – 79kph • 85%ile – 88kph • Average Speeds • Max recorded speed – 157kph • Mean speed – 77kph • 85%ile – 86kph
Summary of 3M Data • Southbound Reduction in: • Max recorded speed – 12kph • Mean speed – 2kph • 85%ile – 4kph • Northbound Reduction in: • Max recorded speed – 2kph • Mean speed – 4kph • 85%ile – 4kph N.B. Exit speed is obtained by doubling difference between entrance and average speed. Exit speed is not shown due to issues with accuracy based upon a single point of measurement.
Summary of 3M Data Southbound • Data Captured Between 24/08/08 – 10/10/08 • Vehicle count – 135168 • Entrance Speeds • Max recorded speed – 174kph • Mean speed – 78kph • 85%ile – 90kph • Average Speeds • Max recorded speed – 171kph • Mean speed – 77kph • 85%ile – 88kph
Summary of 3M Data Northbound • Data Captured Between 07/09/08 – 14/10/08 • Vehicle count – 135168 • Entrance Speeds • Max recorded speed – 148kph • Mean speed – 78kph • 85%ile – 89kph • Average Speeds • Max recorded speed – 145kph • Mean speed – 76kph • 85%ile – 87kph
Summary of 3M Data Q1 2008 data Q3/Q4 2008 data • Southbound Reduction in: • Max recorded speed – 12kph • Mean speed – 2kph • 85%ile – 4kph • Northbound Reduction in: • Max recorded speed – 2kph • Mean speed – 4kph • 85%ile – 4kph N.B. Exit speed is obtained by doubling difference between entrance and average speed. Exit speed is not shown due to issues with accuracy based upon a single point of measurement. Southbound Reduction in: Max recorded speed – 6kph Mean speed – 2kph 85%ile – 4kph Northbound Reduction in: Max recorded speed – 4kph Mean speed – 4kph 85%ile – 4kph
Conclusions • The 3M units are a Speed Information Display. Primary purpose is to reduce traffic speed if needed • Vehicle counts will always be considerably lower as the unit does not classify / distinguish a single vehicle from a line of closely spaced traffic • 3M data / charts concur in most cases with Metrocount data, considering different locations / dates.
Conclusions Cont’d 3M units over the 100m detection range have reduced average and mean speeds by up to 6%, this does not include the additional speed reduction after the sign as driver ‘recover’ from their speed check.
Conclusions Cont’d Even after 12 months, the signs have maintained their effectiveness, seeing reductions in drivers speeds comparable with the reading taken just after installation.
