  1. Scalp Micro-Pigmentation for a Stylish Look in Pattern Hair Loss Scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP) is increasingly gaining in popularity as an alternative for or a complement to hair transplant in male or female pattern hair loss. SMP uses specialised needles to carefully and skillfully ‘tattoo’ or implant coloured pigments/inks into the scalp to create a natural closed hairline. What is SMP? The coloured pigments are implanted into the dermal layer (the layer of the skin below the outer layer, and which does not shed) using specialised needles. The procedure involves making tiny incisions into the scalp and distributing the pigment carefully in each of the dots all over the area with hair loss to replicate a hair follicle. The size of the dot

  2. depends on the required look, the surrounding hair, the skin’s natural behaviour, and the applied pressure. Who is the Right Candidate for SMP? Persons with the following hair conditions can undergo SMP treatment.  Male and female pattern hair loss  Crown hair-loss  Receding hairlines  Camouflaging scars and burns  Head injury

  3.  Alopecia conditions  Damaged hair due to hair systems and extensions  Densification/in conjunction with transplantation In addition, the following types of patients can go for SMP treatment:  Hair receding patients  Patients having scars and burns  Patients with scars post surgery on the scalp, scars resulting from linear, FUE, FUT treatment, and skin diseases, etc. Is SMP Painful? Patients who have undergone SMP treatment found the pain similar to that of a regular tattoo. Sensitivity to any kind of discomfort is found to reduce with each succeeding treatment. How Long does SMP Last? The patient undergoing scalp micro-pigmentation treatment may require repetition of the treatment every six months to maintain the natural look of the colour as well as looking fresh. The natural fading occurs after every treatment, but the pigment will fade away gradually over a long time. How to Keep Looking Great After Scalp Micro- Pigmentation? Some patients may find their SMP fading faster than others, and it depends upon the patient’s immune system as well as the behaviour of the skin. However, maintaining yourself can go a long way to keep the look of pigmentation. These include: Avoiding exposure to direct sunlight for an extended period of time. Moisture the skin regularly and use a hat wherever possible as well as a sun-blocking SPF cream. An extended period of tanning may lead to a renewal of the skin by itself, causing the natural colour to fade fast. The patient should maintain the post-treatment advice given by the surgeon, like avoiding heavy scrubbing, excessive sweating, swimming, etc. Wearing a hat for twelve days or so is also helpful post-treatment.

  4. For any doubt, it is best to contact your surgeon. Avoid using alcohol or bleach-based hair products. Conclusion To a great extent, the natural-looking effect of scalp pigmentation depends on the skill of the surgeon performing skin tattooing. Depending on the pressure applied by the hand of the surgeon, an even pigmentation can be ensured into the dermal skin layer. At IICSAM, practising doctors can enrol in Scalp Micro Pigmentation Training Courses in India that are conducted by Dr Satya Saraswat and Dr Preeti Saraswat.
