Solving Percent Problems When shopping, it is often useful to be able to calculate a percent, to find the sale price, the final price, or to decide which of the two offers is the better deal.
A jacket originally cost $ 48.00. It is on sale for 25 % off. Try this: What is the sale price of the jacket? How much is saved by buying the jacket on sale? Ex: 0.25 x 48 = 12 so 48 – 12 = $36.00 is the sale price of the jacket. $12 is saved by buying the jacket on sale.
How to solve percent problems: A paperback novel originally cost $ 7.99. It is on sale for 15 % off. To find the sale price, change the percent off to a decimal. Move the “imaginary” decimal at the end of the number two places left. ex: 15 % becomes 0.15 2) Then multiply the decimal number by the cost of the item. ex: 0.15 x 7.99 = 1.1985 is the amount of money off the book, round off to $1.20. 3) To find out how much you saved, subtract the amount off from the original price. Ex: 7.99 – 1.20 = $ 6.79 is the sale price of the book
