IYA 2009 “The International Year of Astronomy is a global effort initiated by the international Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Galileo Galilei 445 years old this year!
HANS LIPPERSHEY Often credited with The invention of The telescope around 1608
The galaxy M101 “The Pinwheel” Located within the constellation Ursa Major
GALILEO GALILEI Galileo improved telescope design and began celestial observations with the new instrument in 1609.
Galileo Produced the first lunarmaps … …by measuring shadow lengths, he was able to determine the heights of the moon’s mountains and the depths of its craters!
Observations of Jupiter revealed the four largest “Galilean” Satellites.
The Starry Messengerpublished in 1610 AS OBSERVED BY GALILEO GALILEIGentleman of FlorenceProfessor of Mathematics in theUniversity of Padua,WITH THE AID OF ASPYGLASSlately invented by him,
The Starry Messengerpublished in 1610 Revealing great, unusual, and remarkable spectacles, opening theseto the consideration of every man,and especially of philosophers andastronomers
The Starry Messengerpublished in 1610 In the surface of the Moon, in innumerable Fixed Stars, in Nebulae, and above all in FOUR PLANETS swiftly revolving about Jupiter at differing distances and periods, and known to no one before the Author recently perceived them and decided that they should be named THE MEDICEAN STARS Venice 1610 Office
The Milky Wayis composed of stars that can only be view through a telescope.
Observations of Venus’ phases proved that the classic earth-centered model of the universe was incorrect.
The full range of phases and the apparent changes in size; are only possible if Venus is orbiting the Sun.
Galileo’s observation of sunspots revealed that the sun, like the moon, was not “unblemished”.
Missed Opportunities “…it cannot be helped, Mr. Sarsi, that it was left for me alone to discover all new phenomena of the heavens and none to anyone else. This is the truth which neither malice nor envy can suppress.” Saturn and Neptune
Although Galileo observed Saturn through his telescopes; The instruments were not of sufficient quality to resolve the rings clearly. He thought the rings were a pair of stationary satellites on either side of the planet!
Observations of Jupiter revealed the four largest “Galilean” Satellites.
